Board Games

October 11th, 2017 Leave a comment Go to comments

When I was a kid, the only board games I was familiar with were those I saw on the store shelf.  As an adult, I was (and still am) amazed by how vast the board game market really is. Heck, I didn’t even know what a “Eurogame” was until about five years ago.  As an avid gamer myself, there’s a good chance that if I didn’t know about it, then others didn’t either.

Upon realizing this, I began writing about board games to help spread the word.  My goal is to spread awareness and attempt to bring families closer together through the “ancient art” of family game night, something that I rarely see in today’s society.  I once heard someone say, “A family that games together, stays together”…I didn’t realize how true that was until I started reviewing games with the kids.

So who is the man behind the curtain and what is Dad’s Gaming Addiction?

Firstly, my name is Vincent Paone and I am the author and creator of Dad’s Gaming Addiction.  We’re what you’d call a casual gamer family, though we do play some of the more difficult games from time to time.  We’re also not a stickler for rules and we often bend them to ensure that family night goes off without a hitch.  This serves as a polite warning for those who rage quit games over the slightest rule infraction…that’s just not how we roll.

2017

While family fun is my primary focus, Dad’s Gaming Addiction is also a valuable resource for developers and publishers alike.  In short, we’re a member of the gaming press.  To that end, if you are a game developer / publisher and would like me to cover your game, feel free to get in touch with me at vmp0514@msn.com.  Trying to get your game funded on Kickstarter or just simply noticed?  No problem!  I can do previews, press releases, banner ads, videos…you name it!  Inquire at the above listed email address for rates.

Nice reviews! I see you liked Lords of Vegas. One of its designers, James Ernest, has designed or co-designed many fun, easy-to-learn, quick playing games. You should try some. Start with Kill Doctor Lucky from Paizo Games. If you like that (and you will) try some of the releases from his own company, Cheapass Games (at Cheapass.com). No, I am not an employee of James Ernest. I’m just nuts about his games.

Cheapass Games sounds familiar…I may have done a game of theirs at one point (12 Days, I think). Thanks for the compliments and for being a regular reader! I’ll have to check into the games you mentioned and see if I can get a press copy.

THANK YOU! I have been hearing about this “train game,” and wasn’t sure if Santa needed to bring it or not…thanks to your review, yep-he will be! Plus I found a few more games that Santa will be bringing too. My grandson loves Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit and Chess…and I would much rather spend time playing board games with him than let him get sucked into his video games…but we needed something fresh. I had no idea of all the new games that are available… 🙂

      Hello Heidi!

Thanks for the kind words, I’m glad that I was able to help. If you need any recommendations let me know! Ticket to Ride (the “train game”) is an excellent family game and can be found in both Toys R Us and Amazon. Amazon offers free shipping on orders over a certain amount, so I do most of my shopping there. Have a great holiday!

I just discovered your website after searching reviews on the game Pandemic. Looks like a site I will want to visit often – thank you for your thorough reviews! What are your top 10 games for girls jr high-highschool? Can you sort the games by rating?

    • Vincent
      December 21st, 2013 at 15:31 | #6

      Hi Melanie,

Thank you for your kind words! I don’t have a way to quickly sort them by rating, but I do plan to go through these reviews and note the scores somewhere as a general FYI.

I published our yearly “DGA Awards” article recently, which lists the games each child likes to play. I included both 2012 and 2013 below for your reference. Both Anthony and Carolyn are currently in High School, whereas Vinnie Jr is in Junior High.

      http://www.dadsgamingaddiction.com/dga-awards-2012/
      http://www.dadsgamingaddiction.com/dga-awards-2013/

As far as what games to recommend, that all depends on the individual in question. Some people like party games while others like strategy/thinking games and so on. Would you happen to know what kind of genre the girls enjoy playing?

      Thanks!

      -Vince

Hi Vince – Thank you for your quick reply. Sorry mine is delayed as I was away for the holidays. Thank you for the links to your DGA Awards. That is exactly what I was looking for! We have not yet tried co-op games. I purchased one based on your reviews (Castle Panic) and I look forward to playing it. We didn’t get a chance over the holidays like I had hoped. Maybe our next slow weekend. Thanks again!

      Hi Melanie,

No worries, I know how busy things can get, especially when you have kids! 🙂

Castle Panic is a great choice, as it can be modified to suit your family’s playstyle. If it’s too difficult, you can always roll for monsters every other round, just to name an example. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions… vmp0514@msn.com.

Hi! Do you one for 7 wonders? Really confused which strategy game I should go for. Choosing between:
    1. Acquire
    2. Seven Wonders
    3. The Settlers Of Catan

    • Vincent
      March 4th, 2016 at 20:48 | #15

I don’t own 7 Wonders, but Settlers is pretty family friendly whereas Acquire is a bit more economical. Depends on what kind of game you’re looking for and who your group is.
